Chapter One - Mimi Can't Sleep

 "Why do big kids get to frolic in the road while we’re locked in the bedroom like prisoners in a dungeon?" asked eight-year-old Mimi Havfun as if Candie, her dog, could answer the question. "I don’t see the point in going to bed at 9:00 o'clock just to listen to teenage turbulence bursting through the window trying to bust up my eardrums!"

Mimi folded her legs beneath rainbow-colored sheets and sent her pupils to trace glow-in-the-dark stars that shined across the ceiling like the Milky Way.

"I don’t know how many kids can fall asleep with pesky teenagers carrying on like wild animals beneath their windows," she continued. "But I do know all that laughing teenage wildness makes me want to run around in the dark too.

Maybe I shouldn’t blame those teens for wanting to stay outside street playing in the night. Maybe I’m just jealous because they don’t have to worry about traffic since there’s no traffic to worry about at night. They don’t have to worry about getting all sweaty since there is no beaming sun at night—only a big beautiful moon. Most of all, they don’t have to worry about going home because they don’t have darkness curfews.

If I didn’t have a darkness curfew, I’d stay out in the night too. That would be much more fun than lying in bed aggravated because other people are having fun and I’m not. It would be different if I were asleep; but since I’m awake, I should be able to stay out and enjoy myself."

Candie’s beagle tongue stroked Mimi’s cheek like an ice-cream cone.

"I know what I'll do," Mimi declared—squeezing the dog and scratching its head with fractured nails. "Since I can't stay out late, I’ll stay out long. I’ll make us a special day and call it a "Stay Outside All Day Day". You and I will stay outside from morning all the way until dark. Then I'll have just as much fun as those big kids." With that, Mimi spread her beaded hair cross her pillow and fell fast asleep.
